Material overview
Industrial alkaline powder degreasers are pretreatment chemicals that remove machining, rust-preventive, and press oils plus metal fines from metal surfaces. The standard four-component design: caustic soda (NaOH) and soda ash (Na₂CO₃) saponify oils, sodium silicate handles dispersion, anti-redeposition, and aluminum corrosion inhibition, phosphates (or phosphorus-free chelants) soften hard water and prevent scale, and nonionic surfactants provide penetration and emulsification.
Compared with liquids, powders offer lower freight (no water shipped), no freezing risk, and easier high-concentration control.
Applications by industry
- Plating & anodizing pretreatment — oil removal before electroplating, hot-dip galvanizing, and anodizing determines adhesion quality; used as immersion degreasing followed by electrolytic degreasing.
- Paint pretreatment (powder & e-coat) — before phosphate or zirconium conversion coating of automotive parts and appliance sheet metal.
- Cleaning around heat treatment & welding — removes oils before heat treatment to prevent staining and uneven carburizing; pre-weld cleaning reduces defects.
- Maintenance (MRO) — immersion cleaning of machine parts, chains, and molds to strip heavy oil and grease.
- Powder metallurgy & MIM part cleaning — removal of sizing and impregnation oils from sintered parts, linking to the metal-powder industry's post-processing.
Storage & handling
Standard packing is 25 kg kraft bags with PE inner liners; high-volume users take 500 kg bulk bags. Because caustic soda and soda ash are strongly hygroscopic, store sealed in a dry place — caking occurs if left open. Depending on NaOH content the product may be classified as Class 8 dangerous goods (e.g., UN3262, corrosive alkaline solid), so check transport documents and labels when importing; alkali-resistant gloves and goggles are mandatory when handling.
Market outlook
- Size — the global industrial degreaser market is projected to grow from about US$4.5 billion in 2026 to US$6.1 billion by 2033 (4.3% CAGR); the metal-degreaser sub-market at 5.2% annually to 2033; alkaline degreasing chemicals at 3.8% annually to 2035.
- Structural tailwind from solvent-to-aqueous conversion — under the US EPA's TCE (trichloroethylene) ban, most uses have been prohibited since September 2025, and conversion of solvent cleaning lines to aqueous alkaline systems continues across automotive, aerospace, and maintenance sectors.
- Low-temperature cleaning & energy savings — surfactant-boosted formulations performing at 40–50 °C are spreading in step with energy-cost pressure.
- Wastewater regulation — phosphorus-free, low-COD formulations with biodegradable chelants are expected to gain share.
Note for procurement teams
Grade selection
| Substrate | Recommended type |
|---|---|
| Steel only | High-alkaline type (pH 13) |
| Aluminum & zinc compatible | Silicate-buffered type (pH 11–12) |
Using a high-alkaline steel-only type on aluminum causes blackening and etching — the distinction is essential.
COA/TDS checklist — total alkalinity, free alkalinity, 1% solution pH, phosphate content, recommended concentration/temperature/time, emulsifying vs. oil-splitting behavior.
Practical tips — run a lab test with your dominant oil types (press oil, rust preventive) and confirm degreasing with a water-break test. Dangerous-goods classification changes sea freight, so settle Class 8 status and the MSDS at the quotation stage, and check for phosphorus-free formulation with wastewater treatment costs in mind.
