Material overview
Atomized iron powder is made by disintegrating molten pig iron or low-carbon steel with high-pressure water (water atomization) or gas, followed by rapid solidification. More than 90% of global atomized iron powder is water-atomized; the irregular particle shape interlocks during pressing, giving excellent compactability and green strength.
After atomization, hydrogen reduction/annealing lowers oxygen content and improves compressibility. Compared with reduced iron powder it has higher apparent density and better flow, suiting automated press lines, and is screened into 40–300 mesh cuts by application.
Applications by industry
- PM sintered parts — automotive gears, sprockets, bearing caps, oil-pump rotors and other structural parts are the largest outlet, about 70% of all iron-powder applications.

Storage & handling
Standard packing is 25 kg kraft bags with PE liners or steel drums; bulk ships in 500 kg–1 t bags with moisture-barrier liners. Moisture is the main risk — store palletized indoors below 60% RH and reseal promptly after opening. Fine iron powders may fall under UN1383 (pyrophoric) or UN3089 (flammable metal powder) depending on particle size and oxidation state; typical 40–300 mesh reduced/annealed grades ship as non-dangerous goods, but confirm the MSDS and transport classification before shipment.
